Filming a GoPro-Free POV video.
Back in the fall I got the chance to work on an all POV video for Massachusetts Maritime Academy. The concept was to show a day in the life of a Cadet from their perspective. It was honestly an idea we'd been talking about for YEARS and just never got around to.
Here is the final edit.
The biggest problem with this project was how we were going to get convincing POV footage, and the first thing I did was scratch GoPros off the list. I decided instead to go with the Sony A7rII, and a custom helmet cam build. You can see a breakdown of how I rigged that up below.
It all worked out pretty well, though I quickly learned that there was no way we were going to have cadets wear this contraption. I ended up operating the whole time, and wearing a number of different Mass Maritime Uniforms since you'd see my arms in the shots.
What do you think of the final video? Have you ever tried POV? What did you find worked or didn't work?
