Podcast Episode 9 - Shooting The Wonder List - Guest Joe Simon
Another week, another podcast.
This is the first of the Masters Sessions - podcasts that I recorded in hotel rooms while at Masters in Motion ;) Our guest is Joe Simon - known for being a world-renowned wedding filmmaker who transitioned into commercial work, and now runs his production company The Delivery Men while being a freelance DP as well.
These hotel interviews are a lot less formatted than our usual episodes, and in our interview with Joe I pretty much only talked about The Wonder List - the show that he's been DPing for CNN.
You may be familiar with The Wonder List as the show that was originally tightly branded with Philip Bloom. After shooting the first two seasons Phil left the show, which is when Joe came on as the new DP.
The goal of this episode was to not talk about gear (which we do), but more to talk about what goes on behind making a show like this - the process of being hired as a DP for a big show for a big network. A lot of that can involve gear, codecs, and DIT processes, but it also has to do with communication and logistics.
EDIT: Shortly after releasing this episode of the show Joe got permission to release the Season 3 trailer! Now we can all admire that beautiful Alexa Mini footage ;)
Unfortunately this season of the show is not yet out, so we'll have to wait a little while to see Joe's work. He did show me a little teaser reel though during our interview, and it looks stunning. If you haven't seen anything from the previous seasons - here's the season 2 promo (not shot by Joe).
As always - you can find the show at supersecretfilmcast.com. The best ways to support the show are sharing it with friends and leaving a rating/review on iTunes.
